The Ideal In-Situ Companion to InSAR

The Ideal In-Situ Companion to InSAR

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar measurements are unrivaled in the coverage they provide. However, if fast movements cannot be excluded, accurate deformation measurements are no longer possible using InSAR only due to phase ambiguities. The AIMsight camera system is an efficient way of avoiding such errors around critical infrastructure.

Case Study: AIMsight cameras correct InSAR phase ambiguities during tunnel construction

Due to the relatively fast subsidence of a building close to a tunnel under construction – more than 4 cm in less than 6 days – the Sentinel-1 analysis initially missed the displacement, reporting an upward motion of the building instead of subsidence. A network of AIMsight cameras in monitoring mode (one measurement every 15 min.) provided continuous measurements of the overall subsidence of the building as well as its tilting during this critical construction phase. These in-situ measurements have been successfully used to correct the phase ambiguities of InSAR data and reconcile these measurements with the ground truth.
